With a reality series,
PacSun clothing line, and one lucrative modeling career, it seemed virtually
impossible that Kendall and Kylie Jenner had time to write the new YA
sci-fi book Rebels: City of Indra. In fact, the
youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner siblings did receive help from ghostwriter Maya Sloan, who penned most of the novel with the
girl's guidance and edits.
Though many, including
her own family, have criticized Sloan's decision to work with the PacSun
designers, she just sees it as a job.
"I've learned to
check my ego," Sloan told the Los Angeles Times. "Ego will get you a
teaching job in Iowa grading freshman comp papers, or a 9-to-5 editing
promotional material where you want to slit your wrists. I'm writing for a
living, and it's a gift to be a working writer."
Kendall and Kylie's
creative director Elizabeth Killmond-Roman told
the paper that they had numerous Skype and FaceTime sessions with Sloan, and
gave the author extensive notes.
"People are trying
to take this away from the girls," Killmond-Roman said. "But most art
is collaborative. It was never, like, 'Maya — go off and write 10 chapters and
send them back to us.'"
Though Sloan's name
appears on the book's first page, she is not present at the book signings and
will not appear on Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
The sisters opened up a Twitter Q&A on June 25 where fans asked them about
their writing process. There was no mention of the ghostwriter
throughout.
When one fan asked if
Kendall, 18, and Kylie, 16, wrote each chapter together or individually, Kylie
responded, "All together."
Professional runway
model Kendall said her favorite part of writing the book was "Coming up
with the story lines and characters" and when asked about the worst part
she replied, "Editing it was hard."
